Welcome to Muhu Restaurant, A truly traditional Estonian Experience:
Right in the heart of Muhu, in Liiva village, an old dairy is now home to a Muhu style restaurant with 120 seats.
Muhu Restaurant with its outside terrace and two spacious halls is suitable for dining out, having a coffee or celebrating different events. The restaurant’s walls are covered in the original style of Muhu. Antique needle-pointed blankets and chairs and tables are made by local carpenters. Old style culture and wonderfully modern and fresh foods … a great place to enjoy friends and family, listen to Estonian music and pass a relaxing afternoon or evening.
Interior design…
We were also lucky to have been able to renovate the old lamps from days of the old dairy. The Muhu style furniture in the restaurant is inspired by the old chairs and tables from Muhu farm houses dating back 150 to 200 years. The furniture was hand crafted by local carpenters in Muhu Puidukoda.
The crown jewels of our interior design are very beautiful unique Muhu needle-pointed blankets. The walls of the restaurant have been painted following the original colour of the old dairy with natural casein paint.
Muhu restaurant owns the largest collection of needle-pointed blankets in Muhu, encompassing various time periods and styles. We also use the special space of Muhu restaurant to exhibit historical local utensils such as milk containers, cream jars, milk bottles and wooden forms for cheese that were used in the old dairy.
Some pictures from interior.
Our special selection of Estonian music in the restaurant creates an enjoyable atmosphere for the old and young alike. Come to hear, to see, to taste this special experience of Old Estonia with a contemporary feel and setting with great food.
The history of the building….
The main building of the dairy was built in 1926-1928 and stayed in its original form until 1953 when a boiler house was added to the western side of the building. In 1956-1957 the northern side of the building was added a one story cheese factory and in 1960 the butter factory was added to the eastern side of the dairy. In 1963-64 a second floor was added for lodgings for the dairy workers.
Renovation of the old dairy building began in 2005 and is now completed. The restaurant opened in June 2005 and last summer we experienced great success serving thousands of Estonian and foreign visitors...
Award Winning Traditions
In 1937 butter from Muhu Dairy received an award from the first quality butter contest in Berlin. A marble plate was awarded to the butter producers.
In the old butter factory there is now a large dining hall with fire place. The previous boiler house in the west wing of the building now houses Antique and Ironworks Shop.
The Menu and the superb tastes of Freshness, Estonian Style
The menu offers Mediterranean style pasta, salads and soups as well as homely pork chops, Russian village soup and pancakes. We use local produce- vegetables, herbs, fruit- from Muhu gardens and forests in our cooking. We are especially proud to offer ostrich meat from our very own Muhu Laasu ostrich farm. Our guests have also greatly appreciated our Pork Steak, Tomato soup, and Chocolate cake. For the small ones we have a children’s menu. Take away is available as well as delivery and catering for large orders in Muhu Island or in nearby Saaremaa.
Muhu Restaurant is a great place for dining and drinks as well as a bit of work- we have a free Wifi access
in the restaurant. For the children we have a Lego desk and the coloring books. On Fridays and Saturdays the floor is open for dance and the bar is open until early hours. Come enjoy the days and the evenings with us and experience the old and the new Estonian culture!
